Great documentary I watched today after bookmarking it months ago.  Worth watching if you're curious about the history of science and engineering.  It's easy to take everyday units for granted and forget how long and arduous the process of basing and standardising them were.

There are a couple of other episodes in the series covering other measurements.

    The Science of Doctor Who
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03hybnv/The_Science_of_Doctor_Who/
    Quote
For one night only, Professor Brian Cox takes an audience of celebrity guests, including Charles Dance and Rufus Hound, and members of the public on a journey into the wonderful universe of the Doctor, from the lecture hall of the Royal Institution of Great Britain. Drawing on the latest theories as well as 200 years of scientific discoveries and the genius of Einstein, Brian tries to answer the classic questions raised by the Doctor - can you really travel in time? Does extra-terrestrial life exist in our galaxy? And how do you build something as fantastical as the TARDIS?

The Code of Life: Great Scientists in their Own Words

    DURATION: 1 HOUR
Documentary telling the story of some of the most important scientific thinkers of the modern age - an epic tale of men and women obsessed by intellectual challenges but dogged by their human failings; of bitter personal rivalries, clashes of ideology and unlikely collaboration. These are the people who discovered the structure of DNA and worked out how our genes work, who changed our view of life forever. The film is an unvarnished account of the scientists who dared to discover the secret of life - told through fascinating and revealing archive - in their own words.

Contributors interviewed include: Sir Paul Nurse, biologist, Nobel laureate and President of the Royal Society; Prof Lisa Jardine, historian of science, daughter of Jacob Bronowski, and hence knew many of the Cambridge scientists involved with the DNA story as a child and an undergraduate; Prof Steve Jones, geneticist, UCL.

Horizon - How You Really Make Decisions
    http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b03wyr3c/Horizon_20132014_How_You_Really_Make_Decisions/

    Quote
Horizon uncovers the truth about how you really make decisions.

Every day you make thousands of decisions, big and small, and behind all them is a powerful battle in your mind, pitting intuition against logic.

This conflict affects every aspect of your life - from what you eat to what you believe, and especially to how you spend your money.

And it turns out that the intuitive part of your mind is a lot more powerful than you may realise.

Interesting stuff. Not too surprising to me though. I've known about cognitive biases since 2008 - in particular, confirmation bias.

This is a superbly done BBC documentary on the history of the Arab Revolt and its implications on the modern Middle Eastern political landscape, particularly as it related to the situation in Iraq several years ago. Parallels can also be drawn with the current situation in Syria.

    I strongly recommend watching.

A global scene of 20,000 doll makers and collectors has developed around life-like replicas of newborns called Reborn Babies. The price of these dolls is usually anywhere from $250 to $800, depending on their complexity and level of detail. The most expensive doll, made by artist Romie Strydom, was sold to a collector for 22,000 euros—or around $30,000.

    Cry

I just watched it yesterday, I cringed really hard when he was talking to the non-hijabi girl and she seemed fairly decent until homosexuality was brought up and she was like "Well they're just a lost cause aren't they?". I've always wondered whether radical Muslims originally traveled as radical or if it built up due to a sense of isolation. The video seems to signify the latter; the parents went to Britain to escape Islamic(-ish) rule, but the Muslim children are left isolated from the others, causing them to want everyone else to be like them, in a way.(That's what I got out of the video anyways). Vid was pretty interesting, but the Muslims got fairly repetitive after a while(THE WESTERN WOMEN ARE BEING OPPRESSED VIA BEING ABLE TO DRESS AS THEY PLEASE!)

i'll watch it later but the caption from the documentary " 56% of british muslims believe they will be the victims of extreme religious persecution "

     Roll Eyes

Really " extreme" persecution. Those paranoid fuckwits need to get a life.    Roll Eyes

The only muslims being persecuted are minority sects and they are being persecuted by  other muslims.

But you never hear the mainstream mosques actively doing anything to prevent that.   And no a condemnation statement on a website doesn't count for anything.

If they cared about religous persecution they would be infront of the pakistani embassy protesting and lobbying to put pressure on the pak government to make changes.

This documentary truly changed my life by setting me free. I never had a problem with evolution as our resemblance to other primates is too overwhelming. It's how it demonstrated the development of a very complex seemingly unexplainable thing step by step through simple stages that it helped me be at peace with having unexplainable things in nature/physics unrelated to evolution.
