I saw him on the "60 Minutes" episode couple of weeks ago:

He is a good man.  He is trying to enlighten Islam from within.  He has a very interesting story about how he left Hizb-ut-Tahrir after spending 4 years in jail in Egypt.  He is the co-founder of the Quilliam Foundation.  See http://www.quilliamfoundation.org/
They have a YouTube channel too.  See http://www.youtube.com/user/QuilliamFoundation

Don't know that much about him. He's ex Hizb ut Tahrir who realised how stupid Islamism and Ummah Identity Politics were and went public with his criticisms. He's part of Ed Husain's Quillam Foundation, seen him speak a couple of times, read a couple of his comment pieces. He's still a practising Muslim, he just hates the Islamists and the Islam-as-Politics types now.

Limey is a slang word the yanks use for British people.

Thanks for sharing. Very interesting. I love Stahl BTW. She's one of the coolest sexiest smartest women I have seen. I used to watch a lot of 60 minutes when it was free on Yahoo News. Sadly it's no longer free.  Cry

On a side note, I was taken aback by some of the comments but then I realized it's a Christian-oriented channel.

WHAT?! Sorry IA can you explain further? What exactly is a Christian channel.

I have added 60 minutes to my weekly show, along with SNL. I think I'm pretty good now.

The Youtube channel where the video is uploaded. So the comments are bound to be slanted (because of the ideology of the subscribers).

These are the comments I was referring to:

Why don't you download the show? I mean what's the difference between streaming it on Youtube and downloading it? Since CBS is not the one streaming 60 minutes.

You could have described the YouTube comments simply by saying "Uhhhhh, *drool*, duhhhhh", which accurately describes 80-95% of all YT comments. Spending time on YouTube and in traffic both help remind me of how truly shitty humanity is.

Speaking of the Quilliam Foundation, they managed to get the Home Office to fund a small university tour with the lead singer of Pakistani rock band Junoon.  This is their latest effort against extremism.

Salman Ahmad will try to "urge Muslim students to choose an electric guitar over extremism".

Maajid Nawaz: Bill Maher’s Kind of Muslim _by  the loon Garibaldi

    Quote
Nawaz is not against extremism. He works with extremists! He supports Ayaan Hirsi Ali who has called for Islam to be crushed militarily. When he was challenged on this by us on Twitter he failed to respond. The Quilliam Foundation is directly involved with proud NeoCon interventionist and Judeo-Christianist apologist Douglas Murray. When challenged on this Quilliam and Maajid have also failed to respond.

This coupled with his long track record of alienating the UK Muslim populace makes it clear that he is not interested in really countering Muslim extremists or their ideologies. He is still the same self-fashioned politico that he claimed he was in his Hizb ut-Tahrir days: he is still an opportunist and allied with radicals.

    Quote
Nawaz’s explanation that “Islamism” was merely an outgrowth of Arab Socialism, i.e. Ba’athist fascism in religious garb isn’t convincing. A serious tracing of the genealogy of ideas and intellectual history of “Islamism” shows us that these two political forces are unique and contradictory even if at times certain ideas have overlapped.

“Islamism” is a fraught term, as it attempts to describe a disparate, diverse and geographically spread out phenomenon that is ever evolving in monolithic language. While some groups and ideologues self-describe as “Islamiyoon” (Islamists), often groups who do not are also lumped into the category of “Islamism

Apart from Maajid Nawaz, who else unequivocally condemns barbaric punishments such as stoning? Obviously the "nothing to do with Islam" brigade don't care much for someone who dare say it has got something to do with Islam.

I don't know all of Maajid Nawaz' views, but any British muslim who actually care for their own and their children's future in Britain, should choose someone like Maajid Nawaz over hypocrites such as Mehdi Hasan (non-muslims are animals, dis-belief is a disease) and Mo Ansar (slavery is fine if there is no "oppression" involved).

I don't think people like Mehdi Hasan and Mo Ansar comprehend how muslims who just refuse to integrate and adopt humantistic principles, are fueling anti-muslim bigotry. Especially Mo Ansar seems like a bit of a clown, with his multiple twitter accounts.

Obviously no one is infallible (least of all Mohammed), so Maajid Nawaz most likely has made plenty of mistakes himself, but at least he acknowledges the problems Islam and muslims do have, instead of burying his head in the sand and shout "nothing to do with Islam, nothing to do with Islam". Its just a mere coincidence that religious minorities are maltreated in almost every muslim country, obviously nothing to do with Islam.  Roll Eyes
